What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) has registered a fault in the EVAP system, the valve that controls fuel vapour from the fuel tank to the engine. The code is general and does not specify what kind of fault it is.
Possible causes
- Poor contact or corrosion in the connectors
- The signal wire is short-circuited to supply voltage
- Damaged EVAP valve
What you can do
- 1Read out and note the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the fuses are intact. Their locations are given in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 3Check that the connector at the EVAP valve is fully seated and free from oxidation, and remedy a loose or corroded connection
- 4Look for chafing or pinch damage on the wire to the engine control module, and use a multimeter to check for contact with supply voltage
- 5With a diagnostic tool, activate the EVAP valve and listen or feel for vibration. No vibration suggests a permanent fault; vibration means it is not active now
- 6Replace a damaged EVAP valve, clear the code and road test. If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the valve and wiring
Symptoms you may notice2
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lights up
- Fuel odour
What the fault can affect1
- Fuel trim, the automatic adjustment of the fuel mixture, is blocked
