What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) continuously monitors exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), which feeds part of the exhaust gas back into the intake. If the signals to or from the EGR valve are faulty, this general code is set. The fault is checked while the engine is running, and the code does not specify what kind of fault it is.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the signal wire, or short to ground
- Open circuit in the ground wire, or open circuit or short to ground in the supply wire
- Open circuit or short to ground in the wires to the EGR valve motor
- Damaged EGR valve
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors
- Damaged position sensor in the EGR valve
What you can do
- 1Start by checking the fuses. Their locations are given in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 2Switch off the ignition and check that the intake system has no leaks or damage
- 3Make sure the EGR valve is free from blockage and soot, and clean away any dirt and soot as needed
- 4With a diagnostic tool, activate the EGR valve: it should click and the position sensor value should change. If it stays still after cleaning, the valve is likely faulty
- 5Check that the connectors are secure and clean, and use a multimeter to check the EGR valve wires for short circuits to ground, supply voltage or each other
- 6After repair or replacement the EGR valve must be adapted, which a workshop carries out. Clear the code and road test
Symptoms you may notice1
- The engine warning lamp (check engine) comes on or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect1
- EGR control is lost
