What does this fault code mean?
The code means the current to the EGR valve motor is out of range. The ECM watches the signal from its internal power stage and tests it while the engine runs. Possible causes include an open signal wire, contact problems, a damaged position sensor or a damaged EGR valve.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Damaged position sensor
- Damaged EGR valve
What you can do
- 1Switch off the ignition and check that the intake system has no leaks or damage
- 2Check that the EGR valve and its connections are not clogged with soot or blocked, and clean the valve of soot
- 3Check the connectors to the EGR valve for looseness and oxidation, and use a multimeter to check that the wires are not short-circuited to ground, to supply voltage or to each other
- 4With a diagnostic tool, activate the EGR valve and check that it clicks and that its position sensor value changes. A value that stays still after cleaning suggests damage
- 5After replacement or repair the EGR valve needs adapting, which a workshop does. Clear the code and road test
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
What the fault can affect1
- EGR control is lost
