What does this fault code mean?
If the pulse-width modulated (PWM) signal to the EGR valve is faulty, this general code is set. It concerns exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). The ECM watches the signal from the internal power stage that drives the EGR motor. The code does not specify the kind of fault, and
Possible causes
- The EGR valve is blocked or binding
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Damaged EGR valve
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors
- Damaged position sensor
What you can do
- 1Check the fuses first. Their locations are given in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 2With the ignition off, inspect the intake side for leaks and damage
- 3Make sure the EGR valve is free from blockage and soot, and clean away any dirt and soot as needed
- 4With a diagnostic tool, activate the EGR valve and listen for a click. A position sensor value that stays still, even after cleaning, points to a damaged valve
- 5Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the EGR valve is not short-circuited to supply voltage, to ground or to another wire
- 6After repair or replacement the EGR valve is adapted, which a workshop carries out. Clear the code and road test
Symptoms you may notice1
- The check engine lamp lights up or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect1
- Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is not controlled
