What does this fault code mean?
The code indicates that the current in the circuit to the EGR motor is above the threshold. The ECM watches the signal from its internal power stage and tests it while the engine runs. The causes are contact problems, a sticking or damaged EGR valve, or a damaged position sensor.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors
- Sticking EGR valve
- Damaged position sensor
- Damaged EGR valve
What you can do
- 1Switch off the ignition and check that the intake system has no leaks or damage
- 2Make sure the EGR valve is free from blockage and soot, and clean away dirt and soot
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the wires to the EGR valve are not short-circuited to supply voltage, to ground or to each other
- 4Activate the EGR valve with a diagnostic tool, listen for the click and see whether the position sensor value follows. If the value stays unchanged after cleaning, the valve is probably faulty
- 5Check that the connectors to the EGR valve are secure and free from oxidation
- 6Replace a damaged EGR valve, have a workshop adapt it after the repair and clear the code. Road test afterwards
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
What the fault can affect1
- No EGR control takes place
