What does this fault code mean?
This general code concerns the signal to the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve. It is set if the pulse-width modulated (PWM) signal to the EGR valve is faulty, and the ECM watches the signal from its internal power stage that drives the EGR motor. The code does not specify the kind of fault.
Possible causes
- Short circuit to ground in the signal wire
- Damaged EGR valve
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors
- Damaged position sensor
What you can do
- 1Start by checking the fuses. Their locations are shown in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 2Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the EGR valve is not short-circuited to ground
- 3Check the connectors to the EGR valve for contact resistance and oxidation, and remedy them if needed
- 4With a diagnostic tool, activate the EGR valve and check that it does not bind and that the position sensor value changes. A value that stays still suggests damage
- 5Clean the EGR valve of dirt and soot if it has become clogged again, and check that the connections are not blocked
- 6After replacing the EGR valve, a workshop needs to carry out an adaptation. Clear the code and road test
Symptoms you may notice1
- The check engine lamp comes on or behaves abnormally
What the fault can affect1
- EGR control is lost
