ECM-P046164
VOLVO
ECM-P046164 - Fuel Level Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance. Algorithm Based Failures. Signal plausibility failure
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
2 modelsS80 (2007–), V70 (2008–)
What does this fault code mean?
The code concerns an implausible fuel level signal. The ECM compares fuel consumption with how the fuel level changes over time, and the code is set when the level varies greatly while the vehicle stands still. It can also be a secondary fault, so other codes should be checked first.
Possible causes
- The cause may lie in the central electronic module (CEM)
- The cause may lie in the engine control module (ECM)
- Damaged fuel level sensor
- Contact resistance in the connectors
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes in the central electronic module (CEM) and the ECM, and remedy any other codes first
- 2If you have a diagnostic tool, read the fuel level via the CEM. It should be reasonable and move when the vehicle is gently rocked
- 3Rock the vehicle gently and check the level settles at a reasonable value. A full tank can make the change too small to see
- 4Check the fuel level sensor's plug for contact resistance and oxidation, and remedy it if needed
- 5If the signal is unreasonable at every check, the fault is still present. If it is reasonable when you check, the fault is not active now
- 6If the fuel pump with its sensor is suspected to be faulty, a workshop must replace it
Symptoms you may notice1
- The check engine lamp lights up or behaves abnormally
