ECM-P046187 - Fuel Level Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance. Bus Signal / Message Failures. Missing message
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
2 modelsS80 (2007–), V70 (2008–)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) is missing a message from the central electronic module (CEM), which normally sends the fuel level. The code is a secondary fault: it is first set in the CEM and can only be cleared once the root fault has been remedied and its code erased.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in one of the CAN wires
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- Internal fault in another control module on the same part of the CAN network
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes in the central electronic module (CEM) and remedy them first. This code can then be cleared
- 2Look for chafing or pinch damage on the CAN wires and check that the connectors are secure
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the CAN wires have no open circuit and are not short-circuited to each other
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, read the fault codes in the other control modules on the same CAN network and remedy them
- 5Clear the fault code only when the root fault has been remedied, then road test
Symptoms you may notice2
- The fuel gauge shows an error or too low a reading
- The check engine lamp comes on or behaves abnormally
