What does this fault code mean?
The code is registered as intermittent, meaning the fault is sporadic and does not need to be present right now. The engine control module (ECM) compares fuel consumption with the change in fuel level, and sets the code when the level varies greatly while the vehicle stands still.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connectors
- Damaged fuel level sensor
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool, read the fuel level via the CEM. If the signal is unreasonable now, the fault is permanent; if it is reasonable now, the fault is intermittent
- 2Rock the vehicle gently and see whether the level moves and settles at a reasonable value. A completely full tank can make the change too faint to see
- 3Check the fuel level sensor plug and its joins for contact resistance and oxidation, since this is one of the causes
- 4If the signal is unreasonable on check and the connectors are sound, the fuel level sensor is suspect. Replacing the pump is a workshop job
- 5Clear the fault code once it is remedied, and road test to see whether it returns
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
