What does this fault code mean?
The code means the voltage to the electric fan is too low for a certain period. The engine control module (ECM) controls the fan with a pulse signal through the electric fan control module, and the fault may lie in the wire to the fan motor, in the fan motor or in one of the control modules.
Possible causes
- Signal wire between the fan control module and the fan motor is short-circuited to supply voltage
- Signal wire between the fan control module and the fan motor is short-circuited to ground
- Damaged fan motor
- Damaged electric fan control module
- Damaged engine control module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1The fuses for the cooling fan should be intact. See the owner's manual for their locations
- 2Follow the wire from the fan control module to the fan motor and look for chafing or pinch damage
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the wire between the fan control module and the fan motor is not short-circuited to ground or supply voltage
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, read the fault code from the engine control module, since the code is not read out from the fan control module
- 5If the wiring is sound but the fault remains, have a workshop check the fan motor and both control modules
Symptoms you may notice1
- The engine may run hot or overheat
What the fault can affect1
- The electric cooling fan is active
