What does this fault code mean?
The code indicates an invalid signal from the electric fan, because the message from the fan control module is missing. The engine control module (ECM) monitors the fan and therefore receives no information about its status. The cause may be the wrong type of fan or a connector that is not fitted, but also breaks or damage. The fan may keep running for a while after the engine is switched off, which is normal.
Possible causes
- The wrong type of electric fan is fitted
- A connector is not fitted on an electric fan with two control modules
- Loose contact, contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Break in the power feed to the electric fan
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Damaged electric fan
What you can do
- 1Check that all connectors to the electric fan are fitted and secure
- 2First look at the fuses for the cooling fan. Their location is given in the owner's manual
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, read the diagnostic status and fault status with the ignition on, and see whether the fault is still active
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the wires to the electric fan have no break in the supply or the signal
- 5Check that the terminals are free from oxidation and seated firmly
- 6If the wiring is sound and the fault remains, have a workshop check the electric fan
Symptoms you may notice1
- The electric fan does not work
