What does this fault code mean?
This is an event-driven information code and does not indicate a fault in the engine control module. The ECM sets it when the electric fan is blocked or overheated, when the voltage supply to it is too low, or when the temperature in the fan control module is too high. It goes away by itself once the conditions no longer apply.
Possible causes
- Codes ECM-P048031, ECM-P048000, ECM-P048071, ECM-P048097 or ECM-P048098 may be the cause, so check them first
- Loose connections, contact resistance or oxidation at the terminals, or an open circuit in the fan's voltage supply
- Signal wire short-circuited to voltage or ground, or an open circuit in it
- Obstructed fan blade, blocked or binding fan motor, or a damaged electric fan
- Too high a temperature in the engine compartment
- Code ECM-P145D68 can cause this code, for example after jump starting with high voltage or after a charging system fault
What you can do
- 1Remedy the fault codes for the electric fan first, since this code should not be troubleshot on its own
- 2Check that the fuses for the cooling fan are intact. Their location is given in the owner's manual
- 3With the ignition off, check that nothing blocks the fan blades and that the fan turns freely
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, read the fault status with the engine running to see whether the fault is still active
- 5After the other codes are remedied, road test and check that this code has gone
- 6If the code remains although the fan works, have a workshop check the fan control
Symptoms you may notice4
- The electric fan does not work
- The engine may run hot or overheat
- Temperature control or air conditioning does not work
- The coolant temperature gauge shows an error or too high a value
What the fault can affect1
- The electric cooling fan is active
