What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the electric fan and has registered an indication that the fan is blocked or damaged. The code concerns a mechanical fault where the fan has stuck, meaning the fan or fan motor does not move freely.
Possible causes
- Obstructed fan blade, blocked or binding fan or fan motor
- Damaged fan motor or damaged electric fan
- Loose contact, contact resistance or oxidation in the connections, including between the fan control module and the fan motor
- Break in the power feed to the electric fan
- Open circuit or short in the signal wire, to supply voltage or to ground
- Fault codes ECM-P048031, ECM-P048000 or ECM-P048068 can cause this code
What you can do
- 1With the ignition off, check that the fan blades are not blocked and turn freely
- 2Check the fuses for the cooling fan. Their location is given in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, read the diagnostic status and fault status with the ignition on to see whether the fault is active
- 4Check that the connectors to the electric fan are secure and free from oxidation
- 5Use a multimeter to check that the wires to the electric fan have no open circuit or short circuit
- 6If the fault remains although the fan turns freely, have a workshop check or replace the fan motor
Symptoms you may notice2
- The electric fan does not work
- The engine may overheat or run hot
