What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) has registered an indication that communication between it and the electric fan control module is not working. The fault concerns the exchange of messages between the control modules, and it may be caused by a broken wire or a missing supply to the fan control module.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the signal wire between the ECM and the fan control module
- Open circuit in the wiring harness
- Open circuit in the voltage supply to the fan control module
- Damaged electric fan control module
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact. Their location is given in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 2Follow the wire between the engine control module and the fan control module and look for breaks, chafing or pinch damage
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire is continuous between the engine control module and the fan control module
- 4Check that the connectors to the fan control module are secure and free from oxidation, and that the supply is intact
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, read the fault status with the engine running and see whether the communication fault is still active
- 6If the fault remains although the wire is sound, have a workshop check the electric fan control module
Symptoms you may notice2
- The engine may run hot or overheat
- The engine temperature warning lights up or behaves abnormally
