What does this fault code mean?
The electric fan control module has detected a fault in the fan or its circuit, and the engine control module (ECM) receives the information over the signal wire. The code is set when an indication of a blocked or damaged fan occurs. It may also be linked to high temperatures in the engine compartment.
Possible causes
- Blocked or binding fan or fan motor
- Damaged fan motor or damaged electric fan control module
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the contacts between the fan control module and the fan motor, or an open circuit in the signal wire between them
- The signal wire between the fan control module and the fan motor is short-circuited to supply voltage or to ground
- Too high a temperature in the engine compartment
- Fault codes ECM-P048098, ECM-P048068 or ECM-P145D68 can cause this code, so check them first
What you can do
- 1With the ignition off, check that nothing blocks the fan blades and that the fan turns freely
- 2Check the fuses for the cooling fan. Their location is in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, read the fault status with the ignition on and see whether the fault is active right now
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire between the fan control module and the fan motor is not short-circuited to ground or supply voltage
- 5Look at the connectors between the fan control module and the fan motor for looseness and oxidation
- 6If the fault remains once the fan turns freely, have a workshop check or replace the fan motor and control module
