What does this fault code mean?
The electric fan has overheated, which the engine control module (ECM) detects while it monitors the fan function with the engine running. The cause may be a driver circuit in the ECM that heats up, high temperature in the engine compartment or a damaged electric fan control module. The code is general.
Possible causes
- The driver circuit in the engine control module overheats due to a low-resistance path to the battery that is not a full short circuit
- Too high a temperature in the engine compartment
- Damaged electric fan control module
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses for the electric fan are intact. Their location is given in the owner's manual
- 2Check that the airflow through the radiator in front of the fan is not blocked by dirt or debris
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, read the fault status with the engine running and see whether the fault is still active
- 4If overheating recurs, have a workshop check the electric fan control module and the driver circuit of the engine control module
- 5After repair, use a diagnostic tool to check that the fault status shows no fault once the diagnosis is complete
- 6Clear the fault code only once the fault has been remedied, and road test
Symptoms you may notice1
- The engine may overheat or run hot
