What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) has recorded an event involving the electric cooling fan, for example the fan running at high speed for a long time or being blocked. It is an information code that does not always mean something is broken, and it clears itself once the conditions no longer apply. The fan may also run for a while after the engine is switched off, which is normal.
Possible causes
- Very high outside or engine temperature with long fan operation, for example in traffic queues
- Blocked or sticking fan or fan motor
- High temperature in the engine bay
- Short circuit in the wire between the fan control module and the fan motor
- Damaged fan motor or fan control module
What you can do
- 1Check that the fan can turn freely and is not blocked by leaves, debris or damaged parts
- 2Check the coolant level and that the radiator is not clogged
- 3Check that the fan starts when the engine warms up or when the air conditioning is switched on
- 4If the fan works and the engine does not overheat, no action is needed – the code clears itself
- 5If the engine runs hot, stop and have a workshop check the fan motor and its control module

- Often no symptoms at all if the code is only a recorded event
