What does this fault code mean?
The code concerns the power circuit or the earth circuit of the electric fan. The voltage to the fan falls outside the accepted range for a certain time, and the engine control module (ECM) controls the fan with a pulse signal through the fan control module. The code is general and does not specify what kind of fault it is.
Possible causes
- Short to supply voltage in the wire between the electric fan control module and the fan motor
- The wire between the fan control module and the fan motor is short-circuited to ground
- Damaged fan motor
- Damaged electric fan control module
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses for the cooling fan are intact. Their location is given in the owner's manual
- 2Use a multimeter to check that the wire between the fan control module and the fan motor is not short-circuited to ground or supply voltage
- 3Look along the wire for chafing and pinch damage
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, read the fault status with the engine running, or shortly after it is switched off
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop check the fan motor and the electric fan control module
- 6Clear the fault code only once the fault has been remedied, and road test
Symptoms you may notice1
- The engine overheats or runs hot
