What does this fault code mean?
The code concerns a signal for the EGR valve control that is too low. Its internal power stage drives the EGR motor, and the ECM checks that signal while the engine runs. A low signal can come from several faults in wires, connectors or the valve.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance, oxidation or loose contact in the connectors and connections
- Signal wire short-circuited to ground, or short-circuited to supply voltage
- Damaged position sensor or damaged EGR valve
- The EGR valve sticks, for example because of dirt or soot
- Break in the supply or ground wire, or either of these wires short-circuited to ground or supply voltage
- The wires to the EGR valve motor are short-circuited to supply voltage
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact. Their location is given in the owner's manual or on the fuse box cover
- 2With the ignition switched off, check the intake system for leaks and damage
- 3Clean the EGR valve of dirt and soot, and check that it does not bind
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the wires to the EGR valve have no break and are not short-circuited to ground or supply voltage
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, activate the EGR valve and check whether the position sensor value changes. If it stays still after cleaning, the valve is probably damaged
- 6After replacement or repair, a workshop adapts the EGR valve. Clear the code and road test
Symptoms you may notice3
- The check engine lamp comes on or behaves abnormally
- Poor performance or the car lacks power
- A red warning symbol and a message appear on the display
What the fault can affect1
- EGR control is lost
