What does this fault code mean?
The code concerns a short to supply voltage in the EGR circuit, where the signal wire has received voltage. Its internal power stage drives the EGR motor, and the ECM checks that signal while the engine runs. The causes are a short-circuited signal wire, a damaged position sensor or a damaged EGR valve.
Possible causes
- Signal wire short-circuited to supply voltage
- Damaged position sensor
- Damaged EGR valve
What you can do
- 1Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no contact with supply voltage
- 2Follow the signal wire from the EGR valve and look for chafing or pinch damage
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, activate the EGR valve and see whether it moves freely and the position sensor value follows
- 4Clean the EGR valve if it is sooty, and check that it does not bind
- 5Replace a damaged EGR valve, have a workshop adapt it, then clear the code and road test
- 6If the fault remains although the signal wire is sound, have a workshop check the position sensor
Symptoms you may notice3
- Uneven idling
- Poor performance or the car lacks power
- The car hesitates or runs jerkily
What the fault can affect1
- EGR control is lost
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
