What does this fault code mean?
The code indicates that the flow through the EGR system is too large. The engine control module (ECM) monitors EGR control and sets the code when a fault is found in the EGR valve or its wiring. The fault is checked with the engine running, and the car may show no symptoms to the driver.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance, looseness or oxidation in the connections to the EGR valve
- The EGR valve sticks because of dirt or soot
- Break in the wire to the EGR valve
- Air leak in the intake system
- Damaged EGR valve
What you can do
- 1With the ignition off, inspect the intake system for air leaks and damage
- 2Check the fuses for the EGR system. Their location is given in the owner's manual
- 3Check the connectors to the EGR valve for looseness and oxidation, and remedy as needed
- 4Clean the EGR valve of dirt and soot and check that it does not bind
- 5Use a multimeter to check that the wire to the EGR valve has no break
- 6Replace a damaged EGR valve, have a workshop adapt it and clear the code
