What does this fault code mean?
The code indicates that communication between the brake control module (BCM) and the engine control module (ECM) has stopped. The fault may lie in the CAN wires, the connectors or one of the control modules, or in another control module on the same part of the CAN network.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or a break in the CAN connections or on one of the CAN wires
- Short circuit between the CAN wires, or one or both signal wires short-circuited to ground, supply voltage or each other
- Damaged or internally faulty brake control module (BCM)
- Damaged or internally faulty engine control module (ECM)
- Internal fault in another control module on the same part of the CAN network
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool, read the fault codes in the brake control module and the engine control module, and remedy them first
- 2Check that the CAN connectors are secure and free from oxidation
- 3Look for chafing or pinch damage on the CAN wires and use a multimeter to check that they have no break
- 4The brake system is safety-critical: have a workshop check the brake control module. Do not work on the brake system yourself
- 5Clear the fault code once the fault has been remedied, and road test
Symptoms you may notice3
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lights up
- The cruise control does not work at all
- A message appears on the text display
What the fault can affect2
- the brake module speed signal is replaced by a fixed value
- The cruise control is switched off while the fault is active
