What does this fault code mean?
The code concerns the speed sensor being outside its limits, and indicates that the engine control module (ECM) has calculated an unreasonable gear ratio. The ECM compares the engine speed with the brake module speed signal (BCM). The code does not specify what kind of fault it is.
Possible causes
- Break in one of the CAN wires
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- Internal fault in the brake control module (BCM)
- Internal fault in the engine control module (ECM)
- Internal fault in another control module on the same part of the CAN network
- Faulty brake module speed signal (BCM)
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool, read the fault codes in the brake control module and the engine control module, and remedy them first
- 2Check that the CAN connectors are secure and free from oxidation
- 3Look for breaks and chafing on the CAN wires, and use a multimeter to check that they are not short-circuited to each other
- 4The brake system is safety-critical, so have a workshop check the brake control module. Do not work on the brake system yourself
- 5Clear the fault code once the fault has been remedied, then road test at higher speeds
Symptoms you may notice4
- The cruise control does not work at all
- A message appears on the text display
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lights up
- The speedometer shows a wrong value
What the fault can affect3
- The cruise control is switched off while the fault is active
- On cars with a manual gearbox, the speed signal is set to a default value
- On cars with an automatic gearbox, a secondary transmission module speed signal (TCM) is used
