What does this fault code mean?
The brake control module (BCM) has detected a fault in the speed signal and sends a fault message to the engine control module (ECM), which sets the code. The code is also stored in the BCM. The fault can be intermittent, erratic or high, and may lie in the communication between the modules, in the wiring or in a module.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the CAN connections
- Break in one or both CAN wires
- One or both signal wires shorted to ground, supply voltage or each other
- Faulty brake control module (BCM)
- Faulty engine control module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1Read the codes in the brake control module (BCM) and the engine control module (ECM) and note which are stored
- 2Troubleshoot from the module that sends the signal, which is the BCM. Repair the fault there before clearing the code in the ECM
- 3Check that the connectors in the CAN connections between the BCM and the ECM are secure and free from corrosion
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the CAN wires have no break and that the signal wires are not shorted to ground or supply voltage
- 5Clear the code, road test the car and see whether it returns. If it does, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the BCM
- 6Do not work on the brake control module yourself; the checks that need diagnostic equipment are a workshop job
Symptoms you may notice3
- Cruise control does not engage
- Cruise control does not hold the set speed and disengages
- Autostart does not work
What the fault can affect1
- The speed value from the brake control module is replaced by a default value
