What does this fault code mean?
The ECM verifies that the readings from the pedal sensor and the light switch are reliable. The code is set when the two signals differ repeatedly. The central electronic module (CEM) is also connected to the brake light switch and may be the cause.
Possible causes
- Diagnose the cause in the central electronic module (CEM)
- The wire to the brake light switch has a break or is shorted to ground or supply voltage
- The wire to the brake pedal position sensor has a break or is shorted to ground or supply voltage
- Contact resistance, oxidation or intermittent contact in the connector
- The wire to the brake pedal switch has a break or is shorted to ground or supply voltage
What you can do
- 1Read the codes in the brake control module (BCM) and the central electronic module (CEM) and repair them first
- 2Check that the brake light switch is fitted correctly and that the brake pedal position sensor sits properly
- 3Check the connections to the brake light switch and brake pedal position sensor for oxidation, breaks or a short to ground
- 4Check that the fuses are intact
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, follow the brake pedal positions in live data and check that they agree when the pedal is pressed and released
- 6Do not work on the braking system yourself; if the fault returns, have a workshop check the components with diagnostic equipment
Symptoms you may notice3
- Red warning symbol and message in the display
- Cruise control does not engage
- Warning symbol and message in the display
What the fault can affect1
- Cruise control is switched off while the fault is active
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
