What does this fault code mean?
The ECM compares the brake light switch signal with the brake pedal switch position, which the brake control module (BCM) sends over the CAN network. The code is set when the signals show the same position for an unreasonably long time.
Possible causes
- Diagnose the cause in the brake control module (BCM)
- Poor contact or oxidation in the connections of both switches
- The signal wire has a break or is shorted to ground
- Damaged brake light switch or brake pedal switch
- Brake light switch incorrectly fitted
- Damaged brake position sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the codes in the brake control module (BCM) first and repair them, as this code cannot be cleared until they have been repaired
- 2Check that the brake light switch is correctly fitted and that the fuses are intact
- 3Check the connections to both switches for oxidation, loose contacts and chafed wiring
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, read the brake pedal positions in live data and see whether they change when the pedal is pressed and released several times
- 5After the repair, press and release the brake pedal several times and check that the code does not come back
- 6Do not work on the braking system yourself; have a workshop carry out the checks that need diagnostic equipment
Symptoms you may notice5
- Cruise control does not work at all
- Warning symbol and message in the display
- Cruise control does not hold the set speed and disengages
- Automatic engine start/stop does not work, both while driving and at idle
- The engine does not start, either sometimes or always
What the fault can affect3
- Autostart is blocked
- Cruise control is switched off while the fault is active
- If the fault is present all the time for a long period, vehicle performance can be limited
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
