What does this fault code mean?
The ECM monitors the idle control and sets the code when the actual idle speed stays below the nominal idle speed for a set period. The fault may be caused by leaks or blockages in the air or fuel system, or by another fault code stored in the module.
Possible causes
- Fault in the air or fuel system, such as leaks or blockages
- Blocked intake system
- Blocked exhaust system
- Diagnosis is carried out via another fault code stored in the module
What you can do
- 1Read the codes in the engine control module. If there are other fault codes, repair those first as they may be the cause
- 2At low and unsteady idle speed: check that the intake and exhaust systems are not blocked
- 3Check the intake hoses and connections for leaks, cracks and loose clamps
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, read the idle speed in live data with the engine idling and see whether the value is steady
- 5Clear the code and road test the car, or let the engine idle for a while and see whether the code returns
- 6If the code returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the idle control and the air and fuel systems
Symptoms you may notice4
- The eco lamp is on
- The engine runs at low speed at idle, either sometimes or all the time
- Uneven idle
- The check engine lamp lights or behaves abnormally
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
