What does this fault code mean?
When the engine is cold, the ECM warms the catalytic converter quickly, for example by opening the throttle further or changing the camshaft angle. The code is set when the gap between the energy requested for catalyst heating and the energy actually delivered becomes too large. A sticking throttle, a blocked intake or a clogged air filter may be behind the fault.
Possible causes
- Sticking throttle or fault in the throttle body
- Blocked intake system
- Clogged air filter
- Mechanical faults in the engine
What you can do
- 1Check that the accelerator pedal moves smoothly without catching, and that the throttle opens freely when the pedal is pressed
- 2Check that the air filter is not clogged and that the intake is free from blockages
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, read the throttle position in live data while the accelerator is pressed slowly and check that it follows the pedal
- 4Clear the code and road test the car with the engine cold, then see whether the code returns
- 5If the code returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the throttle body and the mechanical parts of the engine
