What does this fault code mean?
On a cold start the ECM raises the idle speed to warm the catalytic converter up to working temperature. The code is set when the actual idle speed stays above the limit for a set time. This is a component fault in which the idle control does not work as intended. An air leak in the intake system may be the cause.
Possible causes
- Air leak in the intake system
What you can do
- 1Check the intake system for air leaks at the hoses and at the connections to the intake manifold
- 2Note whether the high idle is present when the engine is cold or also when it is warm. A higher idle during warm-up is intentional
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, read the idle speed in live data during a cold start and see how it changes during warm-up
- 4Clear the code and road test the car, or let the engine cool and start it again to see whether the code returns
- 5If the code returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the intake system for leaks
Symptoms you may notice2
- High idle, either sometimes or all the time
- Uneven idle
