What does this fault code mean?
On a cold start the ECM raises the idle speed to warm the catalytic converter. The code is set when the actual idle speed stays below the limit for a set time, that is, even though the idle should be higher during warm-up. A blocked intake or exhaust system may be the cause.
Possible causes
- Blocked intake system
- Blocked exhaust system
What you can do
- 1At low and unsteady idle speed: check that the intake and exhaust systems are not blocked
- 2Check that the air filter is not clogged and that the intake is free from objects
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, read the idle speed in live data during a cold start and see whether it rises during warm-up
- 4Clear the code and road test the car, or let the engine cool and start it again to see whether the code returns
- 5If the code returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the intake and exhaust systems and the idle control
Symptoms you may notice3
- The check engine lamp lights or behaves abnormally
- Low idle, either sometimes or all the time
- Uneven idle
