What does this fault code mean?
On a cold start the ECM controls ignition timing to warm the catalytic converter quickly. The code is set when the requested and the actual warm-up energy differ too much. If ignition timing cannot be controlled as planned, the catalytic converter warms up too slowly and exhaust emissions get worse. The code never occurs alone, so diagnosis starts with the other codes.
Possible causes
- Blocked intake system
- Clogged air filter
- Sticking throttle or fault in the throttle body
- Mechanical faults in the engine
- Diagnosis is carried out via another fault code stored in the module
What you can do
- 1Read the other fault codes in the engine control module and repair them first, as this code always follows another fault
- 2Check that the accelerator pedal moves smoothly and that the throttle opens freely when the pedal is pressed
- 3Check that the air filter is not clogged and that the intake is free from blockages
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, read the ignition control in live data during a cold start and see whether it changes as the engine warms up
- 5Clear the code once the other codes have been repaired, and road test the car with the engine cold
- 6If the code returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the idle control, which is most likely affected too
