What does this fault code mean?
During engine warm-up the ECM compares how the temperature rises with the increase it expects, calculated from factors such as load and starting temperature. The code is set when the engine temperature reading is too far from the calculated value. The fault may lie in the sensor, its wiring or the thermostat.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the wiring and connectors to the engine temperature sensor
- Signal wire in contact with ground
- Signal wire in contact with supply voltage
- Damaged thermostat
- Damaged coolant temperature sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the codes in the engine control module and note whether any other fault codes are present
- 2Check the connector and wiring to the coolant temperature sensor for oxidation, loose contacts and chafing
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, follow the coolant temperature in live data while the engine warms up and check that it rises smoothly
- 4Check that the fuses are intact
- 5Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the temperature sensor has no contact with ground or supply voltage
- 6If the fault returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the sensor and the thermostat
Symptoms you may notice1
- The check engine lamp lights or behaves abnormally
