What does this fault code mean?
The ECM controls the starter motor through the starter relay and checks that it works. The code is set when no start request comes from the ignition switch even though the engine speed is high and the module registers no road speed, or when a start signal arrives during driving when it should not. The code is a follow-on code from a fault in a component or signal that is critical to autostart, so that root fault is repaired first.
Possible causes
- Ignition switch signal wire shorted to supply voltage or ground, or open circuit
- Faulty starter relay
- Fault codes that may be linked to the clutch pedal
- Damaged clutch or brake pedal switch
- Incorrect speed signal
- Diagnose the cause in the brake control module (BCM)
What you can do
- 1Read the codes in the engine control module and repair the others first, as this code cannot be cleared until the root fault has been repaired
- 2Check the fuse for the ignition switch signal wire. If the fuse is blown, check the wire for a short to ground
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the ignition switch signal wire has no contact with ground or supply voltage and no break
- 4Check that the clutch and brake pedal switches are secure and undamaged
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, read the start signal in live data while the ignition key is turned to start and check whether it is registered
- 6Do not work on the braking system yourself; if the fault returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the brake control module
Symptoms you may notice1
- Start and autostart do not work
What the fault can affect1
- Automatic engine start is blocked
