What does this fault code mean?
When the engine is started, the ECM sends a signal to the starter relay that controls the starter motor. The code is set when the module finds that the signal is faulty and that the voltage in the circuit is too low. The fault may be a signal wire shorted to ground or with a break, poor connections, or an internal fault in the module.
Possible causes
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Contact resistance, oxidation or break in connections
- Break in the signal wire
- Internal fault in the ECM
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact
- 2Check the signal wire from the engine control module to the starter relay for breaks, chafing and loose connections
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no contact with ground and no break
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, read the relevant start signals in live data during starting attempts and see whether they follow the attempt
- 5Clear the code and try to start the engine to see whether the code returns
- 6If the code returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the engine control module, as an internal fault may be the cause
Symptoms you may notice1
- The engine does not start, either sometimes or always
