What does this fault code mean?
When the engine is started, the ECM sends a signal to the starter relay. The code is set when the module finds that the voltage in the circuit is too high, which means the signal controlling the starter motor through the relay is faulty. The fault may be a signal wire shorted to supply voltage, poor connections, or an internal fault in the module.
Possible causes
- Signal wire shorted to supply voltage
- Contact resistance, oxidation or break in connections
- Internal fault in the ECM
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact
- 2Check the signal wire between the engine control module and the starter relay for chafing and places where it may have touched a voltage source
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no contact with voltage when the ignition is off
- 4Check the connectors in the signal circuit for oxidation and loose connections
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, read the relevant start signals in live data during starting attempts
- 6If the fault returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the engine control module
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
