What does this fault code mean?
The processor in the engine control module has two levels of monitoring. When level two finds that level one has not stopped a start attempt, although it should have, the code is set. The fault lies in the engine control module itself, but troubleshooting starts with the starter relay and its wiring.
Possible causes
- Damaged engine control module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1Check the starter relay and its wiring and connectors for damage and contact resistance
- 2Clear the code and start the engine to see whether the code returns
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, read the start signal in live data during a start attempt and see whether it is registered
- 4If the starter relay and wiring are in order, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the engine control module
Symptoms you may notice3
- The engine does not start, either sometimes or always
- Warning symbol and message in the display
- The car feels weak or lacks power
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
