What does this fault code mean?

During catalyst warm-up after a cold start the ECM controls the camshaft position, which is adjusted by the VVT unit. The code is set when the camshaft angle on bank 1 is more advanced than requested. Poor engine oil, low oil pressure, or a fault in the camshaft control valve or the VVT unit may be behind it.

    Possible causes

    • Poor engine oil quality
    • Low oil pressure
    • Damaged camshaft control valve
    • Damaged VVT unit

    What you can do

    1. 1If a fault code for the correlation between crankshaft and camshaft position is stored, diagnose it first
    2. 2Check that the engine oil is clean, of the right quality, and that the oil level is correct
    3. 3If you have a diagnostic tool, read the actual and requested camshaft position in live data during warm-up and check that they follow each other
    4. 4If the oil is contaminated, have a workshop change the oil and check whether the VVT unit has been damaged
    5. 5Clear the code and road test the car with the engine cold to see whether it returns
    6. 6If the code returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the camshaft control valve and the VVT unit

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • Uneven idle
    • Reduced performance
    • The engine misfires
    • The car feels weak or lacks power, especially when setting off from standstill
    • The car hesitates or surges, or runs unevenly

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
