What does this fault code mean?
The ECM monitors the exhaust gas temperature using a signal from the temperature sensor at the catalytic converter. The code is set when the reading departs from what is expected. The fault may lie in the connectors, the signal wire or the sensor, but also in the air mass meter, which can show a wrong value because of a leak in the charge air.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in connectors
- Break in the signal wire
- Damaged catalytic converter temperature sensor, for example stuck at one value
- Air mass meter shows a wrong value, for example because of a charge air leak
What you can do
- 1Check that the connector to the temperature sensor at the catalytic converter is secure and not corroded
- 2Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire from the sensor has no break
- 3Check the charge air system for leaks, as the air mass meter reading can be affected
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, read the exhaust temperature in live data once the engine has run for a while and see whether the value follows the engine load
- 5Clear the code and road test the car to see whether it returns
- 6If the fault returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the sensor and the air mass meter
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
What the fault can affect1
- A calculated value is used instead of the measured temperature
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
