What does this fault code mean?
The ECM monitors the exhaust gas temperature through the signal from the temperature sensor. The code is set when the reading from the sensor before the catalytic converter is faulty and reads too high. The fault may be a short or break in the signal or ground wires, poor contact, a damaged sensor, or a blocked exhaust system.
Possible causes
- Signal wire shorted to supply voltage
- Ground wire has a break or is shorted to supply voltage
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Contact resistance, oxidation or break in the connections
- Damaged exhaust temperature sensor before the catalytic converter
- Blocked exhaust system
What you can do
- 1Check that the exhaust pipe is not blocked and that no objects are restricting it
- 2Check the exhaust temperature sensor connector for oxidation, loose contacts and chafed wiring
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire is not shorted to ground or supply voltage
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the ground wire has no break and is not shorted to supply voltage
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, read the exhaust temperature in live data with the engine running and see whether the value changes as the engine is loaded
- 6If the fault returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the sensor and its wiring

- The car hesitates, surges or runs unevenly, especially under acceleration
- The check engine lamp lights or behaves abnormally

- A calculated value is used for the exhaust temperature
- Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is not controlled
- Soot particles are not burned off
