What does this fault code mean?
This code concerns exhaust camshaft (B) on bank 1 and is set when its angle during warm-up after a cold start is further forward than the requested position. Camshaft control is switched off while the fault is present. Poor oil quality, low oil pressure, or a fault in the control valve or the VVT unit may be behind it.
Possible causes
- Poor engine oil quality
- Low oil pressure
- Damaged control valve for the exhaust camshaft
- Sticking control valve
- Mechanical fault in the VVT unit
What you can do
- 1Check that the engine oil is clean and of the right quality
- 2Have a workshop check the oil pressure
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool, read the actual and requested exhaust camshaft position in live data during warm-up and see whether they agree
- 4Clear the code and road test the car with the engine cold to see whether it returns
- 5If the code returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the control valve for the exhaust camshaft and the VVT unit
Symptoms you may notice5
- Uneven idle
- The engine misfires
- The check engine lamp lights or behaves abnormally
- Hard to start, with the engine cranking slowly
- The car hesitates or surges, or runs unevenly
What the fault can affect1
- Camshaft control is switched off
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
