What does this fault code mean?

The ECM checks that the signals from the brake pedal sensor and the brake light switch are reliable. The code is set while the engine is running when the module finds a fault in the circuit to the brake pedal sensor or the brake light switch, or in the CAN communication with the brake control module (BCM). Cruise control is switched off while the fault is active.

    Possible causes

    • The cause may lie in the BCM or the CEM
    • Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections between the ECM and the brake light switch
    • Open circuit in the power supply to the brake light switch
    • Open circuit or short to ground or supply voltage in the wire to the brake light switch
    • Brake light switch incorrectly fitted
    • Damaged brake light switch

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that the fuses are intact
    2. 2If you have diagnostic equipment: read the fault codes in the BCM and CEM and deal with them first
    3. 3If you have diagnostic equipment: read the brake light switch status in live data and check that it shows OFF when the pedal is released and ON when it is pressed
    4. 4Check that the brake light switch is fitted correctly and look for loose or corroded connectors
    5. 5Use a multimeter to check that the wire to the brake light switch has no open circuit or short to ground or supply voltage
    6. 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the brake light switch, since the fault concerns the brake system

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • Cruise control does not work at all

    What the fault can affect1

    • Cruise control is switched off

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
