What does this fault code mean?

Although the code is named battery monitor module, it concerns the 12-volt supply to the engine control module (ECM). The supply is checked at ignition switch-on, and the code is set if the supply voltage is missing.

    Possible causes

    • Damaged fuse for the voltage supply
    • Open circuit in the voltage wire

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that the fuse for the voltage supply to the engine control module is intact
    2. 2Check the battery terminals and connections for contact resistance and oxidation
    3. 3Use a multimeter to check that the voltage wire to the engine control module has voltage when the ignition is on
    4. 4Check the wire running from the ECM to the battery for breaks, contact resistance and oxidation
    5. 5Clear the code and road test the car to see whether it returns
    6. 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the wiring and the supply to the engine control module

    Symptoms you may notice3

    • The check engine lamp lights or behaves abnormally
    • The battery shows low voltage
    • The battery is flat

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
