What does this fault code mean?

Although the code is named serial communication link, it concerns the throttle body motor and an internal fault in the engine control module. The code is set when the ECM detects a fault inside itself or in the throttle motor circuit, and

    Possible causes

    • Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections between the ECM and the throttle body
    • Open circuit or short to ground or supply voltage in the leads to the throttle motor
    • Leads to the throttle motor are shorted to each other
    • Damaged throttle body
    • Damaged engine control module (ECM)

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that the fuses are intact
    2. 2Check the connector at the throttle body for contact resistance and oxidation
    3. 3Use a multimeter to check that the leads to the throttle motor have no open circuit, no short to ground or supply voltage, and no short to each other
    4. 4Clear the code and road test the car to see whether it returns
    5. 5If the fault remains, have a workshop check the throttle body and the engine control module

    Symptoms you may notice3

    • The engine runs poorly and lacks power
    • Idle is uneven
    • The check engine lamp lights or behaves abnormally

    What the fault can affect1

    • The control module cuts the supply to the throttle motor, and the throttle returns to its spring-loaded position, which limits throttle response

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
