What does this fault code mean?
The ECM continuously monitors its internal parts and functions. The code is set when the module finds an internal fault, for example an internal communication disturbance, and it is checked when the ignition is switched on. The fault may come from the software or from a damaged module.
Possible causes
- Damaged ECM
- Faulty software in the ECM
What you can do
- 1Switch the ignition on and wait a while so the diagnosis can run. Then read the code and clear it
- 2Check that the fuses for engine management are intact
- 3Check the battery charge and that the battery terminals and earth connections are tight
- 4If the fault comes back, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment download new software to the ECM. If that does not help, the module needs replacing
Symptoms you may notice4
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) comes on or flashes
- The engine stalls, or it cranks without starting
- Warning symbol and message in the display
- The car feels weak and lacks power
What the fault can affect2
- The ECM tries to restart itself (reset)
- Engine power and speed may be limited
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
