What does this fault code mean?
The ECM continuously checks a range of internal signals by calculating them and comparing them with each other. The code is set when the internal checks give impermissible results, that is when a signal is not plausible. It is checked with the engine running, and a weak battery or corroded connections are common causes.
Possible causes
- Poorly charged battery or corroded connection cables
- Damaged software in the ECM
- Damaged ECM
What you can do
- 1Check the battery charge and that the battery terminals and earth connections are tight and clean
- 2Check that the connectors at the ECM are tight and free from corrosion
- 3Read and clear the code, road test the car with the engine running and see whether it comes back
- 4If the fault comes back, have a workshop reload the software in the ECM. If that does not help, the module needs replacing
Symptoms you may notice4
- The car feels weak and lacks power, especially when pulling away from a standstill
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs roughly during acceleration or deceleration
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs roughly at constant speed
- The problems may be present all the time or only now and then
What the fault can affect1
- Some internal signals in the ECM are replaced by default values
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
