What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is named watchdog, it concerns the two signals from the accelerator pedal. The ECM compares the analogue signal from the pedal with the PWM signal, and the code is set when the difference becomes too large. Engine power is limited while the fault is present.
Possible causes
- Loose contact, contact resistance or oxidation in the connections to the pedal sensor
- Break in the earth wire or signal earth wire
- Fault in the PWM signal or the analogue signal from the pedal sensor
- Damaged accelerator pedal position sensor
- Damaged ECM
What you can do
- 1Read the code and note whether it is active right now
- 2If you have a diagnostic tool: compare the two pedal values in live data while pressing the pedal slowly down and releasing it
- 3Check that the connectors at the pedal and the ECM are tight and free from corrosion
- 4Check that the battery is charged and that the battery terminals and earth connections are tight
- 5If the fault comes back, have a workshop replace the pedal sensor if it is damaged
Symptoms you may notice4
- The car feels weak and lacks power
- The engine hesitates, surges or runs roughly, sometimes or all the time
- Malfunction indicator lamp (check engine) comes on or behaves abnormally
- Warning symbol and message in the display
What the fault can affect1
- Engine power is limited
