What does this fault code mean?
The ECM checks the signal to the starter relay coil, and the code is set when the signal is low even though the ignition is in the start position. The signal wire may be shorted to earth, and then the engine does not start normally.
Possible causes
- Signal wire shorted to earth
- Break in the signal wire
- Damaged starter relay
- Break in the supply to the starter motor
What you can do
- 1Check the battery charge and that the battery terminals and earth connections are tight and clean
- 2If you have a multimeter: check that the signal wire to the starter relay is not shorted to earth and has no break
- 3Check the supply wire running between the starter relay and the starter motor for breaks, and check that the connectors are secure
- 4If the fault remains, have a workshop replace the starter relay if it is damaged

- The engine does not start, either always or only sometimes
- The starter motor does not crank, or only gives a clicking sound when starting
- The engine cranks but does not start
- Auto start does not work
