What does this fault code mean?
The ECM controls the starter motor through the starter relay, and the code is set when the signal controlling the starter motor is wrong at start. The code indicates a current that is too high, and the temperature in the output stage of the module may also be too high.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- If ECM-P061712 is also stored: signal wire shorted to voltage
- If ECM-P061611 is also stored: signal wire shorted to earth
- If ECM-P061513 is also stored: contact resistance, oxidation or a break in the connections, or a break in the signal wire
- Internal fault in the ECM
What you can do
- 1Check that the battery is charged and that the battery terminals and earth connections are tight and clean
- 2If you have a multimeter: check that the signal wire to the starter relay is not shorted to earth or voltage
- 3Check that the connectors at the starter relay and the ECM are tight and free from oxidation
- 4If the fault comes back, have a workshop check the engine control module, since the output stage may be too warm or damaged
Symptoms you may notice3
- The engine stalls, either always or only sometimes
- The engine does not start, either always or only sometimes
- Automatic engine stop and start does not work, both while driving and at idle
