What does this fault code mean?
The ECM sends a signal to the starter relay at engine start. The code is set when the module finds at start that the signal controlling the starter motor through the starter relay is faulty, and the signal wire may be shorted to earth.
Possible causes
- Signal wire shorted to earth
- If ECM-P061712 is also stored: signal wire shorted to voltage
- If ECM-P061513 is also stored: contact resistance, oxidation or a break in the connections, or a break in the signal wire
- Damaged starter relay
- Break in the supply to the starter motor
- Damaged ECM
What you can do
- 1Check the battery charge and that the battery terminals and earth connections are tight and clean
- 2If you have a multimeter: check that the signal wire to the starter relay is not shorted to earth
- 3Check that the connectors at the starter relay and the ECM are tight and free from oxidation
- 4If the fault comes back, have a workshop check the starter relay and the supply to the starter motor
Symptoms you may notice2
- The engine stalls, either always or only sometimes
- The engine does not start, either always or only sometimes, and the starter motor does not crank
