What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module checks the signal to the coil of the starter motor relay and finds the signal reading high while the ignition switch is in position II. The engine may have difficulty starting or may not start at all.
Possible causes
- The signal cable is short-circuited to voltage
- Damaged starter motor relay
- The signal cable is short-circuited to ground (fault code ECM-P061600)
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses for the starting system are intact
- 2With the ignition on, use a multimeter to check that the signal cable to the start relay has no contact with battery voltage
- 3Look for chafed wiring in the signal cable that may have touched a supply wire
- 4Check the connectors at the start relay and the control module for loose connections and corrosion
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool: read the fault code after the repair, clear it and start the engine to see if it returns
- 6If the wiring is intact and the connectors are good but the fault remains: have a workshop check the start relay
Symptoms you may notice4
- The engine does not start, sometimes or all the time
- Automatic start/stop of the engine does not work while driving
- Automatic start/stop of the engine does not work at idle
- The engine does not turn over when starting and there is no click from the start relay
